Product Reviews: Elucence Products

Hello! Welcome to Carefree Curls.
In this post, I will be reviewing three of Elucence's products:

  1. Volume Clarifying Shampoo
  2. Moisture Balancing Conditioner
  3. Volume Designing Foam

Elucence Volume Clarifying Shampoo

Price: $6 for 10 oz.

Ingredients: Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Extract, Honey Extract, Anthemis, Noblilis (Chamomile) Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract, Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ in Purified Water, Sodium Myreth Sulfatel ) (Coconut Oil Derived), Sodium 14-16 Olefin Sulfonate (Mineral Derived), Cocomidopropyl Betaine (Coconut Oil Derived), Cocoamide MEA (Coconut Oil Derived), Salicylic Acid, Biotin, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, EDTA, Polyquarternium-10, Methylparaben (USP), Propylparaben (USP), Benzophenone-4 (UV Absorber), Fragrance/Parfum, FD&C Blue 1 CI 42090, DC&C Yellow 5 CI 19140.

My experience

My experience with this product has been pretty good. I live in an area with pretty hard water, so I get buildup sometimes and need a deeper clean than just a sulfate-free cleanser. This is why I grabbed this clarifying shampoo. I don't need to use it very often: just every now-and-then when my hair is feeling a bit icky. :)
This shampoo does the job! It has EDTA, which is something to look for in a clarifying shampoo because it helps get rid of the mineral deposits from hard water. Note that this isn't a CGM-friendly product because of the sulfates. Like I said, though, sometimes I just need a deeper clean. Also, when I did use it, my hair actually didn't feel dried out or anything.

Pros:

-It cleans my hair
-Surprisingly, it didn't strip my hair too much
-It's great for hard-water areas
-Affordable

Cons:

-I don't like the scent
-Could be drying for some because of sulfates/EDTA

I would recommend this product for anybody like me who lives in a hard-water area and needs a good clarifying shampoo every now-and-then.

Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner

Price: $8 for 10 oz.

Ingredients: Panax Ginseng root extract, cetraria islandia (Irish Moss) extract, saccharomyces cerevisiea (Brewer's Yeast) extract, Gingko Biloba extract, pimpinella anisum (Anise) fruit extract, prunis persica (Peach) extract in purified water, hexadecanol, stearakonium chloride, certimonium bromide, Squalane (olive oil lipid), Capric Caprillic Triglycerides (coconut fatty acids), Panthenol (pro-vitamin USP), Biotin (USP), imisazolidinyl urea, methylparaben (USP), fragrance

My experience

I'm not a huge fan of this conditioner, but I suppose it does the job. I don't like the feel of it in my hair, and it has a really odd sorta citrus-y smell.

Pros:

-Moisturizes hair decently enough
-Doesn't weigh my hair down

Cons:

-I don't like the scent
-Has kind of weird texture
-Doesn't help much with detangling

Over all, it's use-able, but I won't be purchasing it again.

Elucence Volume Designing Foam

Price: $8 for 7.5 oz.

Ingredients: Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, urtica dioica (nettle) extract, melissa officinalis (balm mint) leaf oil, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) extract, aesculus hippocastanum (horse chestnut) extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract, tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) flower extract, equisettum arvense extract in purified water, vinylpyrrilidone/dimethylaminoethyl methylparaben, octooxynol-13 citric acid (usp) fragrance/parfum.

My experience

This product has been alright. The thing is, I had to use a lot of it each time I used it. Otherwise, it does nothing for frizz, definition, or forming the curls. It felt like I didn't even have product in my hair. However, when I tried using more, it worked out a bit better.

Pros:

-It works (IF you use a lot of it)

Cons:

-You have to use a lot
-Doesn't do much for frizz
-Doesn't do much for definition
-I don't like the scent

Would I recommend this product? Probably not. I'm just not a fan.

So, that sums up the products that I've tried from the elucence brand! As you may have noticed, I didn't like the scent of any of their products. I don't know why, but they all smelled..off..to me. I likely won't be repurchasing any of these (I did like the clarifying shampoo, but it has blue 1 in it. I didn't realize this when I bought it. I'm allergic to blue 1. lol).

Product Review: DevaCurl Hairspray

Hi! Welcome to Carefree Curls.

Price: $25 for 10 oz.

Ingredients: Alcohol Denat., Hydrofluorocarbon 152a, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Water (Aqua, Eau), Phenethyl Benzoate, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Aminomethyl Propanol, Propylene Glycol, Monoalkanolamide Borate, Fragrance (Parfum).

My Experience

I'm not a big fan of this spray. First off, the scent is lavender. I didn't realize this when I bought it. I don't like lavender, but I know a lot of people do, so I don't hold that against it. The thing I didn't like about this was that it didn't do a thing for frizz (which I have a lot of), and it made my hair feel gross. It felt like it was coated in dirt or something. It did do what it was meant for, though; it held my hair's shape all day (and the next day as well) with flexible hold and no crunch or flaking.. Even so, I won't be repurchasing this when/if I run out. If I use it, it will probably be for an updo of some sort.

Pros:

  • The scent didn't linger all day. The reasons why I consider this a pro are A: I don't like lavender, and B: it would clash with the other scents I regularly wear.
  • It worked. I mean, it held my hair in its shape all day, and my hair even looked pretty decent the next day.

Cons:

  • It's lavender scented. I didn't realize this when I got it. Of course, this may not be a negative to other people. You may love lavender. I'm just not a fan of lavender.
  • It made my hair feel gross. This is a pretty big con for me. I don't like products that make my hair feel untouchable. It made my hair feel gritty and, over all, gross. That bothered me.
  • It did absolutely nothing for my frizz. Sigh. I still have yet to find a product that makes my hair frizz-free. :(

So, to sum it up, this is an OK hairspray if you don't mind what your hair feels like. It would probably be good for an updo (which is likely what I'll use it for in the future). I personally wouldn't recommend this product, though.

Do you use hairspray? What kind? Post a comment!

Product Review: Ouidad Cleansing Oil

Hi! Welcome to carefree curls.
In this post, I will be reviewing Ouidad's cleansing oil which I received for free through a giveaway. Read on!

Ouidad Ultra-Nourishing Cleansing Oil

Price: $26 for 8.5 oz
Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Propanediol, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Citric Acid, Glycerin, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Polysorbate 20, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil, Trichilia Emetica Seed Butter, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Oil, Passiflora Edulis Seed Oil, Raphanus Sativus (Radish) Seed Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Silk, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Silicone Quaternium-8, Polyquaternium-10, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Cetrimonium Chloride, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Starch Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Benzoate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Eugenol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Limonene, Linalool, Fragrance/Parfum.

My Experience

(Just FYI: This product has silicones in it. I have bolded them in the ingredient list above; however, these are both water-soluble silicones, so they aren't much to worry about.) I like this product! It has a refreshing floral-y scent; I'm usually pretty picky about floral scents, but I love the smell of this product.
I admit I was a little confused when I first read the bottle. Cleansing oil? What on earth is a cleansing oil? I didn't know what to expect until read the instructions and discovered that it's basically shampoo with a fancy name. ;) Anyway, I enjoy it. It leaves my hair clean with a refreshing scent.

The product is pretty runny, but that doesn't bother me. It has a nice, gentle lather and leaves my hair clean but not stripped. It reminds me a lot of Burt's Bee's baobab shampoo (not the scent, the texture/lather). I've found that my hair doesn't like it if I use this product too many times in a row (when I did, my hair wasn't clumping very well), but it works wonderfully when I just use it every now-and-then. My only thought is that this product seems kind of heavy for a shampoo, so if you have fine hair or hair that gets weighed down easily, this may not be the product for you. Also, if your hair is really greasy, this may not get the job done. But if you just need a gentle, moisturizing cleanser, this is perfect. :) Over all, this is a great cleanser!

To sum it all up..

Pros:

-Refreshing scent
-Leaves hair feeling clean and moisturized
-Doesn't strip hair

Cons:

-It's a bit heavy and weighs down my hair if used too often
-It may not be a strong enough cleanser for some people
-It's pricey

Would I reccommend this product? Probably. It's pricey, but if you're willing to spend a bit more money, then it's a nice product.

Product Review: Ouidad Vitacurl Styling Gel

Hi everybody! Welcome to Carefree Curls. :)

In this post, I will be reviewing Ouidad's Vitalcurl Tress Effects Styling Gel which I received for free through a giveaway.

Ouidad VitalCurl Tress Effects Styling Gel

(I took this picture! yay me! :D)

Price: $26 for 8.5 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Polyquaternium-11, PEG-75 Shea Butter Glycerides, Polyquaternium-10, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Pectin, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum).

My Experience

Honestly, my first impression of this gel isn't that great. It has a pretty strong smell that I can't place my finger on what it smells like. Maybe apple cider-ish? It smells like this tea that I drank once; it was called Christmas blend or something like that. (It didn't taste very good.) It pretty much smells like different spices and chemicals. Not a smell I like very much. Also, it has a kind of sticky feeling to it.

The first time I used it, the gel didn't impress me. For one small section of hair, I followed their directions of the "rake and shake" method where you rake the gel through the hair and shake it to bring back the curls, but my curls were too weak and raking gel through them made that section lose most of its curl. For the rest of it, I just scrunched in the gel like I usually do. It wasn't too bad, but it was very frizzy, and the smell lingered all day (which would be fine if I liked the smell, but I don't). Here are a couple of pictures showing what my hair looked like using only this as a styler.

Not sure if you can even really see it in the pic, but my hair was pretty frizzy. Some of the curls closer to my neck under the rest of my hair were nice-looking and defined, but the rest of my hair just didn't look great. It also seemed to take longer than usual to dry.

The second time I used this product, I got pretty much the same results, but it was a bit less frizzy since I just scrunched it in rather than followed their application directions. The scent of the product did fade away eventually, but I still caught a whiff of it every now-and-then (which would be fine if I liked it, but again, I don't). Over all, in my experience, this product didn't work well for me & has a really strong scent that I dislike. I would not re-purchase this product.

So, to sum it all up...

Pros:

-It defined (some of) my hair decently

Cons:

-Strong chemical-y/spicy scent
-Didn't tame my frizz
-Sort of sticky
-Made hair take longer to dry
-Pricey

As you may have guessed, I would not recommend purchasing this product.

Product Review: As I Am Coconut Co-Wash

Hi there! Welcome to Carefree Curls.
In this post, I will be reviewing the As I Am Coconut Cowash.

As I Am Coconut Cowash

Price: $9 for 16 oz.

Ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificada, Purified) Extracts: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) and Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine)¹, Cetyl Alcohol², Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol², PEG-40 Castor Oil, Stearlkonium chloride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil², Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil¹, Phytosterols¹, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract¹, Quaternium-18, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance/Parfum, Limonene, Methylisothiazolinone.
Source: 1-Natural, 2-Coconut

My Experience

Unfortunately, this co-wash did NOT get along with my hair. I wanted to try it out because I had heard so many rave reviews about it, but I could tell that my hair didn't like it when I was washing it out.

I styled my hair as usual, and I was right; my hair didn't like this co-wash. It lost all of its shine & had become frizzy and dry. For some reason, it made my hair a lot less curly than it usually is, and it also caused my hair to lose a lot of volume. After I finished diffusing my hair as usual, my hair was flat, frizzy, and just plain sad. :( Also, it's kind of weird that this product comes in a jar. It has the same consistency as a normal conditioner would, so I don't know why they didn't put it in a bottle.

The only positives about this are that it smells great, has a nice texture, has a decent price, and it did actually clean my hair.

So, to sum it up..

Pros:

-Smells awesome
-Has good slip & nice texture
-Cleaned hair
-Safe for color-treated hair

Cons:

-Bad packaging. Why put conditioner in a jar?
-Definitely didn't work for my hair (left it limp, frizzy, and undefined)

Unfortunately, I don't recommend buying this product. I really wanted to love this product, but sadly, it simply didn't work for me.

Product Reviews: DevaCurl

(Just FYI: I'm in the progress of editing this post.)
Hi there! Welcome to Carefree Curls.
In this post, I will be reviewing the following products (all DevaCurl):

Click any of the names above for a link to that product, or click the names on the reviews below.

First off, if you haven't tried their products before but you want to try some of them out, I suggest looking at some of their sets. That way, you get to try multiple items. I suggest this one: [link]

Price: $20 for 12 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Cetyl Esters, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

I love this conditioner. I use it for my regular conditioner as well as my leave-in, and I also use it when I do a deep treatment. I love the smell of it, but the scent could certainly be an annoyance for some others. This conditioner leaves my hair looking shiny and feeling moisturized, but it has never weighed down my hair! Over all, it's a nicely balanced conditioner.

Pros:

-Glides easily through hair
-Doesn't weigh down hair
-Moisturizes nicely & leaves my hair feeling soft & looking great
-Contains no sulfates, silicones, parabens, mineral oil, paraffin, or phthalates in it
-It has a very pleasant texture

Cons:

-The scent is strong. If you don't like the scent of it, this would be a pretty big con

I would absolutely recommend One Condition to anybody who's willing to spend a bit more for a nice conditioner & will probably re-buy every now-and-then as a splurge. :)

DevaCurl No-Poo

Price: $20 for 12 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Laureth-4, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Propylene Glycol, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Triticum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Menthol, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

Dorky name aside, this product is a nice, solid co-wash. However, I don't really think it's worth the price; it doesn't impress me that much. I mean, sure, it cleans my hair w/out stripping it, but the results aren't that much better than what you'd get with another much cheaper co-wash. Also, I feel like I had to use quite a bit of product per use with this stuff.

Pros:

-It has no sulfates, silicones, parabens, mineral oil, paraffin, or phthalates in it.
-It cleanses nicely.
-It doesn't strip my hair.

Cons:

-Again, the scent in this product is pretty strong. Depending on whether or not you like the scent, this could be an issue.
-It didn't spread as nicely as the condish.
-I had to use more product per use than I would've liked.

Would I recommend this product? Not really; I likely won't be re-buying.

Price: $20 for 12 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), VP/VA Copolymer, Polyquaternium-7, Glycerin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Tricicum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soy) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricia), Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract, DMDM Hydantoin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Fragrance (Parfum)

I'm not going to say much about this gel because it simply didn't fit my hair type. I needed a stronger gel, so I later tried the Ultra Defining Gel (see review below) which worked much better for me. This just didn't do anything for me. No definition, no hold.. It felt like I had no product in my hair. If you need a really light gel, this would probably be fine for you. I just needed something stronger.
So, I would suggest this gel for somebody with hair that doesn't need much hold.

Price: $20 for 12 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), VP/VA Copolymer, Glycerin, Polyquaternium-7, Polysorbate 20, Triticum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Fragrance (Parfum).

Nice! This gel works great for me. It holds pretty well throughout the day & tames my frizz decently enough. If you have curls that get weighed down easily but also need some extra hold, this is a great gel. It can take a few tries to figure out how much product you need; if your hair gets that "crunchy" feeling, don't freak out and shun the product! This is a normal gel thing! As the hair dries, the gel forms a cast on the hair to keep it in its form with minimum frizz. When your hair is fully dry, you scrunch your hair to "scrunch out the crunch". After that, your hair should look a lot better. (Don't confuse the gel crunch with straw-like hair, which is a sign that your hair needs less protein and/or more moisture.) also, remember not to touch your hair until it's completely dried after you put it in & scrunch! Otherwise, you could end up with frizz.

Pros:

-Has nice hold
-Deals with frizz decently enough
-Styles nicely

Cons:

-It doesn't define as much as I would like it to; it needs to be paired with something else for better definition.

Would I recommend this product? Yes, I would recommend it to anybody with hair that needs hold but tends to get weighed down by products.

Price:

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Tapioca Starch, Cetrimonium Chloride, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Laureth-4, Ethyl Macadamiate, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Protein, Panthenol, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Lauryldimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Lauryldimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Propylene Glycol, Ceteareth-20, Disodium EDTA, Aminomethyl Propanol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum).

Meh. This product is okay. Too expensive for what you get, in my opinion. It works nicely if you just have a few certain curls that you need more definition for, though. I just rub a small amount of the product between my fingers & slide them down a curl that needs definition.

Pros:

It defines nicely & smells yummy ;)

Cons:

It's expensive! It feels gross in my hair if I use too much of it, so I only use it for individual curls that need defining.

Would I recommend this product? Nah. I may just not have the right hair type for it.

Price: $9 for 3 oz.

Kind of useless. Doesn't do anything for me.

Pros:

It's an okay refresher.

Cons:

It doesn't really help with frizz, and it doesn't really do anything for me. It just adds a product-y feeling to my hair.

I probably wouldn't recommend this one.

Price: $19.95 for 8 oz

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), VP/VA Copolymer, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, PEG-10 Sunflower Glycerides, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Propylene Glycol, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Aminomethyl Propanol, Carbomer, Fragrance (Parfum).

I actually really like this stuff! More than I expected to! I haven't tried using it alone; I usually scrunch in gel first, and then spray some extra of this over it to make sure I got gel evenly distributed throughout my hair.

Pros:
It's very nice to have a spray gel because it helps to distribute the product more evenly without having to rake it through your hair & mess up the curl pattern. This stuff works just like the other gel (see review for that gel above).

Cons:
it says you can spray it on dry hair, but it feels kinda sticky & gets frizzy when I do that.

Would I recommend this product? Sure! I like it.

--

To sum it all up: The DevaCurl line is pretty good. I really, really love the packaging and design. ;) I also love the fact that they keep a lot of the nasty ingredients like sulfates and silicones out of their products. It's a great place to begin if you don't mind spending a little extra! Their products have a nice, luxurious feel to them; I've certainly enjoyed using them & recommend that you try them out if you want to splurge. :)

I also highly suggest that you take a look at the curly girl handbook, written by Lorraine Massey, the creator of the DevaCurl line. Click here to see the book!

Have you used a DevaCurl product before? If so, feel free to leave a comment & let me know what you think!
